How to measure galvanized pipe size

Measuring galvanized pipe size involves determining its outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), and nominal pipe size (NPS). Here’s how you can do it:

1. Measure the Outer Diameter (OD)

Use a caliper or tape measure to measure the distance across the outside of the pipe.

If using a tape measure, ensure it is wrapped around the pipe and divide the circumference by π (3.1416) to get the OD.

2. Determine the Nominal Pipe Size (NPS)

For standard galvanized steel pipes, the NPS does not equal the OD but is based on standard sizing tables.

Compare your OD measurement with a standard pipe size chart to find the corresponding NPS.

3. Measure the Inner Diameter (ID)

If you have access to the pipe’s interior, measure the inner diameter using a caliper.

The ID is useful for determining flow capacity and wall thickness.

4. Check the Pipe Wall Thickness (Schedule)

If you know the NPS and OD, you can determine the pipe’s schedule (wall thickness) using standard charts.

Measure the wall thickness with a caliper and subtract twice the wall thickness from the OD to get the ID.
